The purpose of AP Human Geography course is to introduce students to the systematic study of patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of Earth’s surface. Students employ spatial concepts and landscapes analysis to examine human social organization and its environmental consequences. They also learn about the methods and tools geographers use in their science and practice.

II. Population VI. Cities and Urban Land Use
III. Political Organization of Space VII. Cultural Patterns and Processes
IV. Agriculture and Development
Grading Policies
Quarter Grades Final Grades Grading Scale
Major Grades – 50% Quarter 1 or 3 – 40% A: 90-100
Minor Grades – 40% Quarter 2 or 4 – 40% B: 80-90
Map Quizzes – 10% Teacher Made Exam – 20% C: 70-80
(Seniors May Exempt) D: 60-70
Power Schools Policy – All grades will be updated in a timely manner, usually within a week of completion. If there are questions or concerns over a grade, please contact Mr. Sosebee. All students are encouraged to keep up with the progress in the class using Power Schools.

Rubenstein, James M., An Introduction to Human Geography: The Cultural Landscape. 9th ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2008.
*Due to budget constraints students will not be assigned a textbook. There will be limited copies available for check out.*
Crash Course in AP Human Geography by Dr. Christian Sawyer – I highly recommend you purchase a copy of this book. It is around $10.00 and can be purchased at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and even download on iTunes.
AP Exam:
The AP Human Geography Exam is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes in length and includes both a 60 minutes multiple choice section and 75 minute free response section. Each section accounts for half of the student’s AP Exam score. The composite score is then converted to a score on AP’s 5 point scale. It is an OPTIONAL test. The cost is $89 per exam. This year’s test will be given on the morning of Friday, May 13th.

A: Arrive of time. (Arrive to class before the bell.)
W: Work responsibly to succeed. (Having all materials, everyday.)
K: Keep a positive attitude. (Do your best on all assignments.)
S: Safety first. (Keep yourself and all other safe by following all safety procedures.) **All students must comply with HSHS and WCPSS rules and regulations.**
Tardy Policy (each class period counts as a separate tardy):
1st-3rd – Tardy Pass will serve as written warning.
4th – Tardy pass will serve as verbal warning.
5th – BCR/Lunch Detention – 5 day lunch pass suspension – parent contact
6th – CLC – 10 day lunch pass suspension – parent contact
7th – Saturday School – Lunch pass suspended for rest of quarter

Checking the online calendar for assignments that were completed, Ask me if you have any questions about missed assignments and/or due dates.
Ask in advance for work if you know you are going to be absent.
You have ONE day for every day you were absent to make up work-if you were absent less than 3 days-and 2 days for everyday if you were absent more than 3 days.
Late Work Policy:
8 Points will be deducted from your grade for each day your assignment is late.
Integrity Pledge:
Cheating is defined as receiving or giving unauthorized assistance on academic work that may be used as a graded assessment for a particular course/subject.
Plagiarizing is defined as copying the language, structure, or ideas of another and representing it as one's own work including altering, restating, or paraphrasing another person's words, ideas, or work without giving credit or acknowledging your sources. This would include, but not be limited to text, music and video clips, photos, graphics, and artwork. Students must cite information used from the Internet, CD-Rom, books, magazines, newspaper etc.
Students who engage in or attempt to engage in acts of cheating or plagiarizing will be referred to an administrator and parent called. Starting the 2008-2009 school year, any student caught cheating on any assignment will be able to re-do an alternate assignment, with the highest possible grade being a 59.
Segments of videos and complete videos will be shown in class in order to demonstrate concepts relating to Human Geography. These films may include but are not limited to: Slumdog Millionaire, Food Inc., Rabbit Proof Fence, Whale Rider, Hotel Rwanda, Which Way Home, Episodes of “30 Days”, and other films which help to illustrate content directly related to the AP Human Geography Curriculum.
